Myths vs. Facts: Common Misconceptions About Renewable Energy

In recent years Renewable energy has gained significant attention as a solution to climate change. And yet, despite its growing popularity, myths about renewable energy still continue to linger. Let’s quickly debunk some of the most common myths.

Myth 1: Renewable energy is unreliable

Most believe solar or wind energy cannot provide consistent and dependable power as neither are guaranteed. For example, at night the sun won’t shine, and on a clear day, the wind won’t blow. While it is true that some renewable sources depend on weather conditions, modern energy systems combine multiple types of renewable energy sources and combine energy storage devices such as batteries, which then allows for a stable and reliable power supply.

Myth 2: Renewable energy is too expensive

While in the past renewable energy was known to be costly, prices have seen a significant decrease over the past decade.

In fact, renewable energy sources have been shown to compete — and often beat — other nonrenewable energy sources. As shown from the graph above, it is evident that renewable energy sources are consistently on the lower end of expenses when compared to nonrenewable energy sources. Additionally, investing in renewable energy sources reduces expenses in the future, as they lower fuel costs and they minimize environmental degradation.

Myth 3: Renewable energy is not effective on a large scale

Many argue that renewable energy sources can only power small areas and do not have the capacity for larger scale projects. In reality, most countries have already begun to generate significant portions of their electricity through renewable energy sources. For instance, Iceland and Norway rely almost entirely on hydroelectric and geothermal power. Combined with the fact that other nations such as Germany and Denmark are also managing to incorporate large-scale solar and wind power into their national grids successfully, it is clear that renewable energy can be effective on a large scale.

Myth 4: Renewable Energy harms the environment

Admittedly, no energy source is completely impact free on the environment, but it is important to note that renewables are far cleaner than fossil fuels. Solar and wind power produce minimal greenhouse gas emissions, and ongoing research continues to improve sustainability.

Once again, as seen through the graph above, renewable energy sources are consistently producing the last amount of greenhouse gas emissions when compared to nonrenewable energy sources.

In conclusion, renewable energy is not merely a futurist idea, but a practical, cost effective, and environmentally friendly solution. By separating myths from facts, we can better understand its potential, and work towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
